Skyler's first day of Fall break was pretty good. We went and watched some trains.
He did this for nearly an hour!

Fieldtrip!!
After 6 years in school, Skyler finally got to go on his first field trip yesterday! They all met at the TRAX station and rode the train downtown to the Children's Museum for a visit to "biz town" to practice having a real job.
The return trip train. The train set was one of the newly overhauled legacy trains.
90 5th graders departing the train!

Last night's was homemade chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and corn.
Crisping up nicely.
Homemade cream gravy really made the dish. Delicious!

Skyler's morning glory.
He started these late in the summer in the greenhouse. They really took off and he watered them every afternoon. Last night's 26 degree temperature did them in I'm sad to report.
This one is nearly 6 feet tall.
He "braided" the two plants together.
North plant flower.
South plant flower.

Chucky Squirrel!
The dog goes bananas anytime she sees one on our walks.
Not sure how they got here, but they are now everywhere in our neighborhood.

The Intermountain Power Plant.
It's insanely big when you get up close to it!
Only 2 units were built out of the planned 4.
Here's a video of the insides.

Doing good things in school.
Look who made it onto the school's Facebook and Instagram pages!
Skyler told me they all helped to load the books into the Principal's van.

Star watch party.
Great Basin is an "international dark sky park." This is great for looking at the stars. They host a star party on Thursdays and Saturdays after dark. It was epic!
We enjoyed some natural air conditioning by Lehman Creek before dinner.
The Great Basin really is great.
Headed to the amphitheater.
Dark sky info.
Our seats for the star party. Note the auto tracking telescopes in the distance. Phones or other white light sources weren't allowed so no pics after dark.
Even though it was only 2 night away, it was a much needed break and an incredible mini vacation. We're definitely going back!

Junior Ranger.
Skyler completed another Junior Ranger packet while we were at Great Basin.
The drought is very real still. This lake was nearly empty.
Oh my god!
Skyler was fascinated by the tree borer.
Taking his ranger oath.
Look at that stained glass in the Visitor's Center!
Final pics tomorrow...

Glacier trail.
First stop, the bristlecone forest!
Wheeler Peak in the distance.
Getting closer to the bristlecones.
One that is no longer with us.
Another.
There's something strangely beautiful about the dead bristlecones.
10,600 feet!
More tomorrow. The glacier!
